Why the end of the school year can take a flying leap

May is the worst.

Perhaps, in other parts of the world that aren’t Arizona — places where school releases for summer break in, say, June for example — May isn’t so bad.

Though, in that case, I’d bet June is just as godawful.

Let’s see. This week alone, we have two water days, one pizza party, one choir concert, a class play, one club banquet, and three class celebrations. Yearbooks are coming in; overstuffed backpacks full of THINGS I DO NOT WANT are coming home. In fact, I’ve got three sitting on my kitchen table as we speak, demanding to be emptied and sorted before being sent back for a fresh load.

That cute little class messaging app on my phone — the one with the customizable cartoon monsters representing each of my three elementary-aged children? It chimes with reminders and surveys and sign up sheets and schedule changes no less than five times a day.

My kindergarteners (twin six-year old girls, pray for me) started their end of the year countdown at 26 days to go, with each day labeled alphabetically: American Day (wear red white and blue!), Bubbles Day (bring in a container for recess!), Class Color Day (remember your class shirt!), Dance Day, Exercise Day (it’s field day! you’re volunteering…
